Area Manager

Position Overview

The Area Manager oversees the activities of all stores, achieves Quantitative measures of performance within stores, is responsible for overseeing all of the recruiting, hiring and training needs of the store, makes decisions that affect the overall performance of the store, and orients new employees or other peers to store operations.

Store Operations
• Achieves quantitative measures of performance in the following areas:
o units per transaction,
o average sales,
o sales per hour,
o sales per square foot,
o sales conversion,
o payroll expense,
o payroll expense % sales,
o turnover,
o shortage control and
o contests.

• Prioritizes and communicates daily store issues to store managers.
• Establishes and communicates daily, weekly and monthly sales goals to store managers.
• Ensures scheduled staff meetings are conducted on a regular basis.
• Drives and creates company contest to motivate staff.
• Models customer service behavior and monitors associates levels of service. Guarantees
that customer service evaluation scores are 70% or higher.
• Adheres and enforces company policies and procedures.
• Oversees the execution and implementation of merchandising as specified by company
directives to ensure maximum profitability through margin sets.
• Schedules staff to ensure maximum store profitability in all areas.
• Adheres and enforces loss prevention audit guidelines. Creates measures to ensure
compliance by all staff.
• Responsible for monitoring operational expenses to ensure profitability. Provides budgetary
input to Retail Operations Manager as needed.

Staff Development (30% of time)
• Delegates responsibilities to other members of the store management team and staff.
• Trains and develops staff on sales techniques, customer service, teamwork, and other
NY behaviors. Develops management staff to assume leadership roles within the
• Actively recruits new employees and manages the stores recruitment profile.
• Drives visual presentation and company standards through effective staff development.
• Evaluates associates performance annually and promotes open lines of communication
through coaching and motivation.

Direction (20% of time)
• Interprets and makes decisions on operations and visual standards based on store and
clientele needs.
• Communicates business drivers, merchandise and quality issues, and other related
information to the Retail Operations Manager, Retail Buying Team, and Corporate Office as

Formal Training (10% of time)
• Oversees the new hire orientation program.
• Oversees and disseminates any training needs or issues that Corp mandates.
• Responsible for assessing additional training needs required for optimal performance within
the store.

Additional Responsibilities (5% of time)
• Assumes and completes other duties as assigned by supervisor

Job Requirements
• Minimum four years store manager experience with a proven track record for driving sales
and profit results and training and developing a team of individuals
• Personal computer and detailed report analysis
• Bachelor studies or equivalent preferred
• Frequent store visits, moderate travel
• Uses sound judgment when making decisions
• Excellent communication and time management skills
• Acts with integrity and respect
• Adapts to changes required by the business
• Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
• Ability to manage promptly and independently also unexpected events and issues
